On Jan 27, Brookhaven National Laboratory welcomed Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science, at a celebration to mark the completion of the major installation process for the sPHENIX experiment. More than eight years of work were required to reach this milestone, and along the way, more than 14,000 scintillator tiles were tested at GSU from 2019 to 2021 (mostly carried out by undergraduates, who were led by graduate students). GSU Prof. Megan Connors, GSU postdoc Dr. Virginia Bailey, and former GSU graduate student Dr. Anthony Hodges (pictured) were all in attendance at the ribbon cutting. The sPHENIX experiment is expected to begin taking data in April 2023.
